HAVANA - Cuban leader Fidel Castro has avoided any mention of handing over power to his brother in his latest newspaper column, instead lauding his country's ability to endure a decades-long US embargo.

Yesterday was the first anniversary of Castro officially ceding power to his brother Raul, the defence minister, which was presented at the time as a temporary move.
