The police must confine themselves to fighting serious crimes instead of arresting poor people found loitering in the Johannesburg CBD.

The police must confine themselves to fighting serious crimes instead of arresting poor people found loitering in the Johannesburg CBD.

Their recent action smacks of a police force that is insensitive to the plight of the unemployed and homeless.

To arrest people in such misery is inhuman.

The South African Human Rights Commission, which has promised to probe the matter with all the relevant parties, has warned that the arrests could actually be illegal in that they infringe on a person's right of movement.

The police must carry out their duties of maintaining law and order and stop harassing these poor folk whose only crime is to walk in and around the CBD looking for food and employment.
