Nominations are invited for candidates who qualify for the provincial finals of the Aggrey Klaaste Mathematics, Science and Technology Educator of the Year Awards.

These yearly awards aim to promote quality learning and teaching in maths, science and technology.

It does this by rewarding extraordinary teachers in public schools.

The competition has been running since 1998.

It supports the nation-building philosophy by encouraging quality and recognising practising and retired teachers.

The awards are named in honour of Sowetan's late former editor in chief, Aggrey Klaaste, whose contribution to the development of South African society was immense.

Sponsored and organised by Sowetan, Telkom Foundation and the national and provincial education departments, the awards are open to teachers in the General Education and Training (GET) and Further Education and Training (FET) sectors, and to retired teachers.

The awards honour existing and retired teachers who:

l Demonstrate a love for maths, science and technology;

l Show a willingness to explore new ideas to improve maths, science and/or techno-logy learning and teaching;

l Encourage their pupils to become independent;

l Instil in pupils a love for these important subjects;

l Have a proven track record in producing good results;

l Work within communities to uplift public understanding and appreciation of these subjects.

Reigning champions of the 2006 Aggrey Klaaste Mathematics, Science and Technology Educator of the Year Awards are Thamsanqa Makhathini and Colin van Tooren of KwaZulu-Natal and Mamosadi Monareng of North West.

Education Minister Naledi Pandor is a keen supporter of the awards.
