The Mpumalanga government has stopped the inauguration of a traditional leader who proclaimed himself a chief after his brother's death.
Though the law only allows for a son, and not a brother, to take over in the event of a chief's death, Ephraim Mhaule insists he is the legitimate successor. The late chief has a son.
On Saturday the Local Government and Housing Department stopped the inauguration scheduled to take place at Nkambeni tribal authority in KaMajika, near Hazyview.
The KaBokweni magistrates' court issued an order barring the inauguration pending a high court decision.
Departmental spokesman, Simphiwe Kunene, said: "It has been established that Ephraim Mhaule is the illegitimate inkosi for the Sand River (KaMajika) area.
"The interdict follows sworn statements in an affidavit by the first applicant Dokotela Mhaule, which he filed in court.
"Victor Mhaule argues that he is the rightful inkosi of the Nkambeni tribal authority following the death of his father in 2004," Kunene said.
