Police denial that there is a gang of thugs operating from OR Tambo International is disquieting.

In just less than a month, marauding thugs using the same modus operandi have pounced on two high-profile South Africans . In both incidents, the victims were followed to their destinations, accosted and ordered to surrender their cellphones, laptops and other valuables.

Sadly in one of the attacks, Eric Khetang Lerata, Nuclear and Energy Corporation manager, was shot dead outside his home soon after arriving from the airport.

Only a week ago, South Africa's ambassador to the UN, Dumisani Khumalo, was robbed outside his son's home in Johannesburg, also after having just arrived in the country.

The 2010 Soccer World Cup is around the corner and the same airport will be a hive of activity.

Police should probe whatever information the public provides about criminals who nestle around the airport in search of victims to rob.

There has to be a total overhaul of security at OR Tambo. On July 25, Sowetan also alluded to stricter controls and policing at the airport.

Taxi touts must also control their business in an orderly manner and stop harassing people.

Under no circumstances should airport bosses relax and allow the situation to degenerate.
