Few would dispute the struggle against the subjugation of women in this country has galvanised into a formidable and unstoppable force.

Its momentum has raised awareness of women's rights and their empowerment to levels unmatched elsewhere on the continent. This thanks to local women who have for decades tirelessly championed their cause.

Unbeknown to many until recently was that the fight against the subjugation of women had begun much earlier than the historic march by women to Pretoria in the 1950s. A group of women had bravely paid the ultimate price for defying a King Cetshwayo order to marry one of his regiments 131 years ago.

Poignantly, the KwaZulu-Natal government belatedly saluted their bravery at a commemoration this week.
