The Education Department yesterday denied reports that the current grading system in schools was confusing teachers.

This was in response to a claim by the Freedom Front Plus that teachers were confused because the terms "pass" and "fail" were no longer used in school reports.

"Nobody's confused, certainly not teachers. We did away with 'pass' or 'fail' system so learners could be given more information which indicates how they are progressing," said department spokesman Lunga Ngqengelele. "We report on what the child can do and cannot do." - Sapa
