The executive mayor of Capricorn district municipality in Limpopo, Motalane Monakedi, yesterday urged the community of Nkotokwane village in GaMphahlele near Lebowakgomo to protect their infrastructure.
Monakedi (pictured) was speaking at a ceremony to switch on electricity in the village. The village falls under the Lepelle-Nkumpi municipality.
The R1,2million project was started in 2005 to benefit 260 households in the village.
"We are here to celebrate the good partnership between the municipality and the community.
"We will provide electricity to ensure the lives of our people improve.
"Through this pupils from this area will now have an opportunity to read and access information much easier," said Monakedi.
He said he believed electricity would enable pupils from local schools to be even more competitive when they meet pupils from other areas.
"It is also the community's responsibility to protect these assets from vandalism and abuse," he said.
Monakedi, who is also provincial chairman of the South African Local Government Association, further urged the community to 'actively participate' in governance structures, such as ward committees, to give effect to their voices.
He said those who were not able to afford electricity should use the ward structures so they could be registered to be eligible for free basic electricity.
Kgoshigadi Mphahlele of GaMphahlele, who represented the beneficiaries, said she was delighted by the level of cooperation between the municipality and local community.
"Let us continue to use this cooperation to develop this and other villages.
"We still require a number of services to effect the required level of development in this area," the traditional leader added.
