A 25-year-old woman was arrested after she allegedly threw her newborn baby into a pit toilet near Harding in KwaZulu-Natal.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested after she allegedly threw her newborn baby into a pit toilet near Harding in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesman Captain Zandra Hechter said yesterday the woman was arrested on Tuesday night after tip-off from neighbours.

Hechter said the woman told police at the time of her arrest that the baby was still-born and "that was her way of burying the child".

The woman also told police she did not know she was committing a crime.

The rescue unit of the Port Shepstone police retrieved the baby's body yesterday.

Hechter said a post-mortem would be conducted to determine whether the baby had been dead at the time it was thrown into the pit toilet. - Sapa
