Pupils and teachers at Ekukhanyisweni Primary School in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, were last week presented with a new building by Gauteng Housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane.
"We will match this gesture with an admirable school culture," said principal Mofenyi Mabonela.
Mabonela said it was the responsibility of the community, pupils and staff to protect the school from vandals.
More than 1000 pupils will benefit from the modern infrastructure that has been added to the existing double-storey school.
The new building has 25 classrooms, one more than the demolished old school. It comprises a library, computer room and a sick room. The school now boasts a new administration block with a boardroom.
Ekukhanyisweni, built with asbestos in 1960, was initially named LM Taunyane Primary School after Alexandra's famous resident, teacher and football administrator, Leepile Taunyane. It was renamed Ekukhanyisweni in the 1980s.
In 2005, as part of the Alexandra Renewal Project, the housing and education departments decided to demolish the school and build a new one.
Pupils were moved to a nearby church during the rebuilding period, which took eight months.
Mabonela said: "Teaching will obviously improve because teachers are no longer worried that the building will fall on their heads".
Mokonyane said the school was a reflection of the good work done by the project to give the township a facelift.
