As you read this, talented Free State youngster Teboho Pholosi is living his wildest soccer dream in Sao Paulo in Brazil. And it is all thanks to the education- through-sport initiative, Shona Khona.

Sixteen-year-old Teboho from Matshabeng in Free State is at the famous Sao Paulo Football Club's soccer academy with 11 other equally talented boys.

They are Clifford Maserumule, 15, from Limpopo; John Tsoari, 14, from Gauteng; Thabo Mbokazi, 13, from KwaZulu- Natal; Dane Van Schalkwyk, 12, from Gauteng and Mpho Baloyi, 15, from North West.

As well as Mzwandile Magqwaka, 14, from Western Cape; Bongani Mocksin, 13, from Eastern Cape; Jerry Nkwana, 13, from Gauteng; Moalusi Mathe, 16, from Free State; Lwandolwethu Bhebhetha, 14, from Eastern Cape and Dominic Mfusi, 13, from Gauteng.

The youngsters qualified for the week-long advanced soccer coaching and life skills development trip after being chosen at two separate introductory soccer-coaching and life-skills induction camps in December and June last month.

About 180 hopefuls attended the camps at the Safa and Transnet Sports School of Excellence at Elandsfontein in Ekurhuleni in Gauteng. They impressed the coaches who included Marks Maponyane, James Mabena and Stan Whiting.

Shona Khona was started two years ago by Reckitt Benckiser and Metcash to expose boys and girls aged between 10 and 16 from under-developed communities and giving them opportunities to improve their lives.

Sowetan and SABC are media partners and the newspaper has made the project a part of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation's youth and community development activities.
