Mpumalanga traffic authorities are investigating how an epileptic man was given back his driver's licence after an accident in which he allegedly drove over six street vendors.

The accident, in which the six vendors died, happened when the man lost control of the vehicle during an alleged epileptic attack three months ago.

His licence was withdrawn by the traffic department after the accident.

But the man, Lifa Mkhabela of Schoemansdal, near Malelane, was this week seen driving in his mother's car.

Community members have questioned how the man was given back his licence.

Residents fear the man might cause more accidents because of his condition.

Meanwhile, the family of one of the victims has threatened to sue the traffic department for allowing the man to drive.

"We are still waiting for our attorneys to study the situation and, if it is proven that the man is suffering from epilepsy, then we will take further steps against the department," said the man, who did not want to be named.

But the provincial Roads and Transport Department has launched an investigation into the matter.

"The matter is in the hands of the police.

"This department will need the cooperation of the police together with the doctor's report to prove the allegations about the condition of the accused before deciding on the next course of action regarding the licence," said departmental spokesman, Joseph Mabuza.
