Burnt policeman dies in hospital

A Durban policeman who sustained serious burns in a fire at a police residence in the city centre has died.

Craig Roach suffered 90percent burns in a fire that broke out on the 13th floor of Natalia Building on Monday.

Roach, 35, worked for SAPS for 12 years.

Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said that Roach's wife and two children, who were also admitted to hospital, were doing well.

"It's a great loss for the police service to lose one of their most valuable members in such a tragedy," said Mdunge.

Hundreds of police officers and their families had to be evacuated from the residence on Monday as fire engulfed the building.

A police helicopter had to be used to airlift Roach and his wife from the top of the building. Their two children suffered smoke inhalation. - Canaan Mdletshe
