Union calls for exams delay

The National Teachers Union (Natu) has called for the matric exams to be postponed by two weeks.

The union said it was concerned about the state of preparedness of matric pupils despite the catch-up recovery plan that has been implemented in KwaZulu-Natal and the other provinces.

The union has written to the national Department of Education asking that the exams be rescheduled because of time lost as a result of the public sector strike in which teachers participated.

The final Grade 12 exams are scheduled to start at the beginning of October.

Natu spokesman Musa Gumede said they were concerned that pupils did not have enough revision time.

"The pupils need time to revise before writing their final exams," said Gumede.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union said yesterday it did not share Natu's concern.
