Almost 40 years after his death, American human rights activist Martin Luther King Jr is still remembered and revered worldwide.

His words have an enduring quality and they inspire awe. He has been immortalised by his "I have a dream" speech, one of the most recognisable pieces of rhetoric in the world.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu praises him highly in an introduction to the book, The Words and Inspiration of Martin Luther King, Jr, as the epitome of ubuntu.

"The essence of ubuntu shines so clearly in the life and actions of Martin Luther King, Jr .

"His ubuntu showed that the only way we can ever be human is together. The only way we can be free is together," Tutu wrote.

Whoa! What a compliment.

South African journalist and writer Mike Nicol summarises King's short life beautifully.

He gives the reader valuable insight into what made him tick.

Who knew that a man like King enjoyed pillow fights, had a penchant for fine clothes and food and believed that Jesus Christ had spoken to him to allay his fears?

The book is one of a series that gives snippets of the lives and ideals of icons such as Mother Theresa and Mahatma Gandhi.

In less than 100 pages, this little book shows that in his greatness King was still an ordinary human being with the power to dream.
