A KwaZulu-Natal man drank battery acid and made his one-year-old baby drink the poison after stabbing his girlfriend five times last week.

Both the man and the toddler are fighting for their lives at the intensive care unit of the Christ the King Hospital in Ixopo.

Kholeka Madiba, the 18-year-old woman who was stabbed, was admitted to the Edendale Hospital.

Police said they found out about the incident when they were responding to a domestic violence complaint at Ntekaneni location, outside Donnybrook, in KwaZulu-Natal south coast.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Superintendent Zandra Hechter said when the police went to attend the complaint, they discovered that the suspect had stabbed Madiba five times.

"But the suspect had already left the scene to go to his house where he drank and made the baby drink battery acid," said Hechter.

She said both the baby girl and her father, were rushed to the hospital.

Hechter said the police were investigating an attempted murder case.
