Cops to charge parents with neglect

A Mpumalanga youth was questioned by police following the abduction, vicious rape and murder of a four-year-old girl at the weekend.

The girl was taken from her home in Middelburg at night without anyone noticing and was found in an open space the next day. Police said they would also charge the girl's parents with child neglect and abuse.

The parents had apparently taken the child with them to a drinking spree on the Friday night. It is not clear how they parted company with the child, but she was apparently brought home by a neighbour.

The child's grandmother has told police that she put her to bed just before midnight on Friday.

The granny said she was woken up by neighbours on Saturday morning and told the child had been found dead in the veld.

The granny said she had left the door open so the couple would have easy access to the house when they came back.

The couple are known in the area to be very heavy drinkers.

Inspector Boss Mokoena, who is investigating, told Sowetan yesterday that they had detained a 20-year-old suspect in connection with the girl's gruesome death.

Superintendent Abby Khoabane of the Mpumalanga organised crime unit also appealed to the local community to assist the police with any information relating to the case.

Khoabane confirmed that the girl's father, 24 and mother, 22, had visited a local tavern with the child on Friday evening.
