A miner was found dead underground at Anglo Gold Ashanti's Moab Khotsong mine, near Orkney, at 2am yesterday, said NUM.

Anglo Gold Ashanti spokesman Steve Lenahan said the body of a second miner was located at 9am.

A third miner rescued after the fall on Friday sustained minor injuries.

The men were trapped in a fall of ground, caused by a seismic event, 3000 metres underground.

Lenahan said there could be up to 100 seismic events a day.

While the 0,7 magnitude on Friday would not ordinarily be significant, it was because of where it happened in relation to mining activity.

Lenahan said the miners' names would be released when their next-of-kin had been contacted. - Sapa
