Kirsten Nematandani, prominent South African soccer administrator, has been appointed to serve as head of delegation of Team South Africa to the 24th World Student Games in Bangkok, Thailand, from August 8 to 18.

This was announced at the weekend by Glen Bentley, president of the South African Student Sports Union (Sassu).

Nematandani, who is a director of sports at the University of Venda in Limpopo, is also a member of the national executive committee of the South African Football Association.

He is also convenor of the Safa referees committee.

"We have appointed Kirsten chef de mission for the Bangkok-bound team," said Bentley, a former cross-country athlete who is also studying marketing at the University of Johannesburg.

Bentley is the joint deputy chef de mission with IIhaam Groenewald.

Chaka Croukamp is accounts manager, Steven Thomas sports manager, Xoliswa Ntombela administrative manager, Sakkie Booysen hospitality manager and Sanele Madlala is transport manager.

Bentley said the South African student sports governing body, which will soon disband and fall under the Olympic sports confederation's university section, will send a delegation of just over 300 to Thailand.

"There is a lot of pressure on Team South Africa because of the 2010 World Cup, the focus in the world is now on South Africa in as far as sports is concerned. The teams have been training hard and everybody is looking forward to the tournament."

Some of the sports to be played in Thailand include athletics, soccer, judo, basketball, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, badminton, fencing, gymnastics, aquatics, softball and golf.

It will be the first time that softball will form part of the tournament.
