Nigeria wallop Banyana

What do Banyana Banyana have to do to beat Nigeria?

This is the question Banyana Banyana, their technical staff and the people of South Africa must be asking after the Nigerians stamped their authority again over South Africa last night.

They walloped South Africa 4-0 in the final of the All Africa Games (AAG) in Algiers, Algeria.

The win saw the Super Falcons maintain their unbeaten run against Banyana Banyana in all competitions.

The South Africans lost 1-0 to Nigeria in the final of the AAG in Abuja, Nigeria, in 2003.

However, Banyana Banyana raised some hopes of surviving against the west African country in last night's final after they drew 2-all with the Super Falcons in the opening match of the AAG on July 9.

South Africa led Nigeria 2-0 at the interval in that match but allowed them to score two late goals to force the tie into a stalemate.

Augustine Makalakalane, Banyana Banyana coach, should be wondering what to expect from their hoodoo team when they meet in the Beijing 2008 Olympic qualifier in Nigeria on Saturday.

Makalakalane missed some of his quality players yesterday because of injuries to Belinda Nkosi, Janine van Wyk and Anthonia Carelse.

"We are going back to the drawing board and we will see if we will succeed against Nigeria on Saturday. But we are positive," Fran Hilton-Smith, Banyana Banyana team manager told Sowetan last night.
