Khiphezakhe Zitha Nkomo of Diepkloof in Soweto was shot and seriously wounded when he tried to flee from robbers. An ambulance from Netcare 911 collected him and paramedics claim they dropped him at Leratong Hospital where he died an hour later. But the hospital authorities said they had no record of his having been admitted.
Yet his body was at the same hospital when the family and Sowetan enquired about him.
Without casting aspersions, how did Netcare 911 know that he died an hour after they dropped him at the hospital?
Obviously paramedics would not have just dropped such a seriously wounded patient in the hospital corridors and left.
They would have had to submit certain information to the nurses relating to where they found him and so forth.
The Leratong Hospital has promised to open an investigation and the probe should be cast wider so as to include the police.
Nkomo's family, who searched for him at nearby morgues and hospitals in vain, were traumatised.
It follows that they want closure as to what exactly happened to their loved one.
