Moss Mashishi, top South African sports leader, has been elected to serve on the Confederation of Southern African National Olympic Committees (Cosanoc) executive committee.

Mashishi was elected at the weekend at a meeting of the body's leaders during the All Africa Games that are under way in the Algerian capital of Algiers.

"There was a position on the executive which has been vacant and sports leaders in southern Africa felt I was the right person to occupy it," said Mashishi from the North African country yesterday.

"When the meeting started, it was announced that I was the only person who had been nominated for the position and I felt great. It was a vote of confidence from the rest of southern Africa.

"For me this was done in recognition of the successes of Sascoc [the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee of which Mashishi is the president]. It shows we are beginning to get strong recognition."
