The Limpopo baby born with four legs two weeks ago, has died.
The family says she died on Thursday. The 'miracle baby' had just undergone an operation at the George Mukhari Hospital in GaRankuwa.
Though no doctor at the hospital could confirm the baby's death, a family source from Natalspruit in Gauteng confirmed that the mother was at the hospital when her daughter died. The baby's father, who did not wish to be named, said the baby started swelling and that her stomach had bulged.
"It all began on Thursday after she came back from an operation. When we realised her stomach was bulging, we suspected something would happen to her. Our suspicions became a reality when she died," said the grieving father.
"Authorities at the hospital have requested that we be patient so that they can conduct a postmortem to determine the cause of her death," said the father, who also revealed that the operation had nothing to do with the removal of the two extended legs.
"It is really sad to lose such a lovely gift.
"We were hoping to raise her like any other child and give her lots of parental love. Now that she is no more I feel powerless. But I hope with time one will overcome this trauma," said the 28-year-old father who works in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.
Several attempts to speak to the baby's mother drew a blank because she did not answer her phone.
The executive mayor of Capricorn District Municipality Motalane Monakedi has contributed R10000 to assist the family with funeral costs.
