Egypt had 58 silver and 71 bronze, which gave them an edge over the hosts who had 55 silver and 71 bronze. South Africa were a distant third with 60 golds, 60 silver and 48 bronze.
The hosts took three gold medals in rowing held in Boukerdane Dam in the tourist city of Tipasa, 70km east of the capital on Saturday, with South Africa and Egypt winning two golds each. Tunisia took one gold in the women's lightweight single sculls.
Algerians won in the women's lightweight double sculls, men's lightweight single sculls and men's lightweight double sculls. Their top doubles pair, Mohamed-Riad Garidi and Hassan Ait Daoud, who won the 2km event in 7min: 2,23sec, qualified for next year's Olympic Games in Beijing.
Egypt, who had dominated the sport in previous games, took gold in the men's open single sculls and men's heavyweight doubles. South Africa won gold in women's open single and women's heavyweight double sculls.
In wheelchair basketball, South Africa's men fought back from a half-time score of 24-25 to beat Algeria 57-48.
Egypt, who had upset the hosts in a pulsating handball final before a roaring crowd, also ended Algeria's campaign in men's volleyball with a 3-1 semifinal victory. - Reuters
