Football should have been the winner but allegations of racism have put a spanner in the works and raised doubts around the Under-20 World Cup currently under way in Montreal, Canada.

Sapa-AP reported yesterday that Fifa is investigating Nigeria coach Ladan Bosso over claims of racism following his team's 4-0 quarterfinal humiliation by Chile in extra time in a game played last Sunday.

When Fifa's anti-racism campaign was brought up at the post-game news conference, Bosso said: "What happened on the pitch, the officiating, I think Fifa has a long way to go to beat racism, because that official showed racism."

English referee Howard Webb waved off Nigerian claims of offside on one of the goals.

The Nigerian massacre will be one of the highlights shown on the African Soccer Television show on SABC1 Sport's Laduma programme on Sunday at 3pm.

Other highlights from the Under-20 World Cup include the Group C match in which Gambia beat European powerhouse Portugal 2-1 and Nigeria's 2-1 defeat of Zambia in the round of 16.

Jack Warner, the tournament's organising committee chairman, said on Wednesday he has instructed the Fifa Disciplinary Committee to open a case against Bosso.

Asked if he felt Webb was a racist, Bosso said only that "it's good for Fifa to bring in the fight against racism, but they have to follow it to the letter".

Simba Sports Club won the Tanzania League Cup match against arch-rivals Young Africans 5-4 on penalties.
