President Thabo Mbeki is deeply hurt by insinuations that he had anything to do with the assassination of the late SACP leader Chris Hani.

The ANC released a statement yesterday expressing its "disquiet" at insinuations, through song, by delegates at the SACP's 12th congress in Port Elizabeth, that Mbeki tell them who had killed Hani.

The conspiracy gained momentum when a documentary was screened in Johannesburg on Wednesday insinuating that Mbeki was linked to the assassination.

Adding to the developments, are convicted killers Janusz Walus and Clive Derby-Lewis's invitation to the SACP to ask them any questions that might explain the assassination of Hani.

"The suggestions, made without any reference to any evidence in any form, are deeply hurtful and patently irresponsible.

"The ANC will resist any attempts to create suspicions among its leaders or doubt within its ranks," said ANC spokesman Smuts Ngonyama.
