Former Fugees star Pras Michel, left, spent nine days on the streets of Los Angeles without any money as part of a new movie documentary about homeless people.

He shot the film, Skid Row, last year and admits the experience opened his eyes to the problems faced by the homeless .

"I went in with the notion that it'd be easy, but then you get there and you realise it's a whole other world and that ignorance is bliss," he says.

"Most people think homeless people are on drugs or lazy, but that is far from the truth. I left with a completely different mindset on the situation."

In the film, which will be released in select US cities later this month, Pras is seen fighting off attacks from rats and drug addicts.

He is currently mourning the loss of one homeless friend he met while filming.

He adds: "I just got a call last week. One of the guys that used to be a heroin addict and helped us, he died of an overdose." - Wenn
