Zimbabwe issue is complex

The problems of Zimbabwe are complex and the idea that the elimination of Robert Mugabe is the solution, is short-sighted.

Like most developing countries, Zimbabwe is vulnerable to the forces of globalisation.

Even if Mugabe were to step down tomorrow, that would not resolve its problems irrevocably and amicably.

From an economic point of view, the proposition that Zimbabwe should be integrated into the southern African rand monetary union is desirable.

Politically, Mugabe is just performing his duties as mandated by Zanu-PF and the Zimbabwean electorate as a whole. Therefore, whether Mugabe is president or not, that does not have contentious repercussions to the policy direction of that government. At least Zanu-PF speaks with a common voice as compared to the confused and divided utterances of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leadership.

The recent price reductions will give Zanu-PF more political clout with the predominantly poor Zimbabweans in the upcoming elections. This reduces the chances of the pro-West MDC from coming to power.

It is important that Zanu-PF and the divided MDC should strive to do away with "the external forces that have kept them apart" for the betterment of all Zimbabweans.
