The Wits Business School (WBS) will be doing its part for service delivery in local government with the introduction of a new course for municipal managers.

"We've already trained 50 public servants," said WBS head Professor Mthuli Ncube yesterday.

"We intend on training 2000 municipal officials, including chief financial officers, municipal managers and executive mayors over the next three years," he said

In a report from the Centre for Policy Studies, senior researcher Ebrahim Fakir said though local government had made remarkable progress in the transition from apartheid to democracy, many challenges still had to be faced.

Fakir said: "There have been modest, though marked, successes in the rollout of basic services. Institutionally much of the local government has been beset with transitional fatigue, institutional weakness and governance failure.

"The course will be very intense; it's only a level below our MBA course," said Ncube.
