'We find most missing kids'

Tebogo Monama

Every year more than 1500 children go missing in South Africa.

But the SAPS says it has an 80percent success rate in finding the children.

Pieter Boshoff of Missing Children, an organisation helping find missing kids, said: "Though the success rate in finding missing children is high, we still worry about the children not found."

Statistics indicate that the most important period after a child has been reported missing is 72 hours.

However, Herman Conradie, a criminologist specialising in child abuse, said: "The first day after a child has been abducted is the most critical.

"After 24 hours, the abductor seeks ways to silence the victim."

Boshoff said children should be taught to never accept lifts, gifts or money from strangers.
