Prosecuting apart-heid-era law and order minister Adriaan Vlok is not a departure from reconciliation, the South African Council of Churches said yesterday.

The SACC's newly elected president, Tinyiko Maluleke said: "Rather, the prosecution seeks to strengthen reconciliation by bringing out the truth."

He was speaking on the final day of the SACC's triennial national conference.

The NPA this week said Vlok and ex-police chief Johann van der Merwe would be charged with attempted murder for an alleged plot in 1989 to kill Frank Chikane, who was then secretary-general of the SACC, by lining his underwear with a poison that would attack his nervous system.

SACC secretary-general Eddie Makue said: "It is important that the truth be known for forgiveness to take place". - Sapa
