A young Eastern Cape man rescued his 66-year-old mother from a would-be rapist who came to his home apparently looking for him.

Butterworth police have arrested the 22-year-old attacker and charged him with raping the youth's mother at her home on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said the woman was alone at her home in Mission Village in Butterworth when the attack allegedly took place.

Manatha said the woman was watching television when the suspect entered the house claiming to be looking for her son.

Manatha claimed that when the visitor discovered that the woman's son was not at home, he allegedly attacked and raped her.

However, a few minutes later, the woman's son arrived home, and rescued his mother.

"Together with other members of the community, the woman's son apprehended the suspect and handed him over to police," said Manatha.

He said police investigations had not been completed, but that the suspect would appear in the Butterworth magistrates' court later this week.
