Cosatu leaders misled workers

I would like to air my views about the disappointing behaviour of Cosatu's leadership.

I would like to air my views about the disappointing behaviour of Cosatu's leadership.

Recently, Cosatu led a national strike to force the government to increase the salaries of civil servants by 12percent. But the strike was unique in the sense that even those workers providing essential services went on strike.

What became clear is that Cosatu and the SACP used the strike to further their political ambitions. They told the nation that they would not accept anything less than 12percent, but ended up accepting the 7,5percent after two weeks.

In as much as we all sympathise with public service employees, the manner in which the strike was carried out was unfortunate. Cosatu used the plight of public service employees to canvass its position in the ANC policy conference.

In future, workers must be vigilant against these opportunistic actions by Cosatu secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi. The culture that was inculcated by Cosatu's late president Elijah Barayi, Cyril Ramaphosa and many other reputable leaders of the trade union congress must not be eroded by the power hungry current leadership.

The workers were misled.
