A large and enthusiastic contingent from the Johannesburg-based Sowetan Women's Club turned up for the monthly discussion on business and investment opportunities.

The event was held at the popular Indaba Hotel and Conference Centre in Fourways on Thursday.

Doreen Selekiso, one of the winners of the monthly 2006 Mageu Number One Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award, gave a motivational talk.

Selekiso encouraged club members who want to succeed in business to acquire academic and practical training.

"Gaining academic and practical knowledge and skills has helped my catering business to remain viable," Selekiso said.

"I am expanding my business. A new branch is taking shape in Bethlehem in Free State," she said.

Representatives of sponsors Old Mutual, Mageu Number One, Aranda, Spekko, Playtex and Boschendal also attended.

Under the theme of "Hospitality Leading Up to 2010", the event aimed to educate club members about business prospects in the hospitality industry and to show them how to benefit from the industry as the World Cup nears.

Jinty Ainsworth, a hospitality chamber coordinator at the Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Education and Training Authority (Theta), gave members some valuable tips.

Ainsworth encouraged the women to enter the hospitality industry long before the world soccer tournament kicks off, if they want to benefit from the event.

Other speakers included Thandekile Khumalo, a business consultant from the Tourism Enterprise Programme.

She also highlighted the many ways in which her organisation is helping women to capitalise on the sector's different business opportunities.

Motivational speaker, Makheni Motana, compered the event. Members were treated to music from emerging Afro-jazz sensation, Thiwe.

A fashion show featuring Aranda blanket designs and creations by local innovators topped the night's entertainment. - Additional reporting by Victor Mecoamere
