The government has for far too long turned a blind eye to the plight of hostel residents in various parts of the country.

The government has for far too long turned a blind eye to the plight of hostel residents in various parts of the country.

After promising to convert hostels into family units almost 10 years ago, the authorities have still not delivered. In some areas, renovation and the improvement of hostels is moving at a snail's pace.

Weekend protests by hostel inmates signify their impatience with lack of delivery by a government that appears to care very little about them and their families.

We condemn their violent actions at the weekend but hostel residents have a legitimate grievance.

The government must fulfil the promise it made a decade ago to turn hostels into functioning family units.
