Ananias Mathe, the prisoner who escaped from Pretoria's high security C-Max Prison, appeared in court again yesterday.

Mathe, 29, looked in better health this time. He kept smiling at people in the Pretoria magistrates' court where he was charged with escaping from lawful custody. He wore a wrinkled white shirt, brown jersey and grey trousers.

Mathe escaped from C-Max Prison on November 18 last year.

At the time, he supposedly covered his body with petroleum jelly to enable him to squeeze through the window of his cell. This report was subsequently refuted.

Mathe was one of the most wanted criminals in the country. He faces more than 50 cases ranging from murder, attempted murder and rape to armed robbery.

His case was postponed to October 5 to allow the state to centralise all the charges against him.
