Police in KwaZulu-Natal said they prevented many incidents because of arrests made during Operation Dudula.

Police spokesman Bonisiwe Nxumalo said KwaMashu police at the weekend arrested 12 motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, five shebeen owners dealing in liquor without a licence, five people for public drinking and two suspects for possession of dagga.

Nxumalo said they would continue to arrest drunken drivers to prevent road accidents.

"We believe that most fatal road accident are caused by drunken driving," she said,

Nxumalo said the unlicensed shebeens owners have been charged and liquor valued at R20000 was confiscated.

"The arrest of unlicensed shebeen owners helps minimise assault cases," she said.

During the campaign two drug dealers were also arrested and 20 pills confiscated.
