Bodies rot in mortuary

Pathologists have only managed to identify four of the 15 bodies that have been lying at the Umzimkhulu government mortuary in KwaZulu-Natal for more than two years.

The pathologists said that the delay in identifying the bodies was because of the state of their decomposition.

"It is estimated the bodies have been in the mortuary for between two to three years. The mortuary asked for the police's assistance in finding relatives of the dead people and identifying the bodies," said police spokesman Zandra Hechter.

Hechter said the police only managed to identify four of the bodies.

"A number of tribal structures have been informed and requested to announce in the villages for anyone who has missing persons to go to the mortuary to identify the bodies. The bodies are guarded by police at the mortuary," said a pathologist identified only as NR Naidoo.
