As the re-elected SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande has said the party's congress was indeed a foundation for the ANC conference.
By electing individuals known to be sympathetic to ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma on the SACP central committee, the delegates have boosted Msholozi's chances of becoming the ANC's new president. Having Zuma as president will in turn go a long way in boosting the SACP's chances of swaying the ANC more to the left.
Though Zuma is regarded as an outright nationalist he has proved to be amenable to the left's call for more pro-poor policies. This could be part of his populist strategy to woo more support from the left - but in turn he has put himself in a position where the left will expect some payback.
As to how much payback the left will get under Zuma will depend on the balance of forces within the alliance.
It is this balance that the SACP and other sections of the left - including Cosatu - hope to sway in their favour, hence their call for the ANC national executive to have more working class representatives.
The public's interest in whole matter is that the alliance should deliver in improving the lot of many South Africans who continue to bear the brunt of apartheid.
