Two cops on tender fraud charges

Two police officers will appear in the Viljoenskroon magistrates' court today on charges of fraud and corruption.

The officers, a male and a female inspectors, both stationed at Vierfontein police station in Free State, allegedly defrauded the state of more than R50000 in tender irregularities since last year.

According to police spokesman Superintendent Motsantsi Makhele, the female officer, whose responsibilities also included supply chain management at the station, irregularly awarded tenders to her male colleague.

"Investigations have revealed that the tenders were for maintenance work such as painting and other general work at the station. It appears that they split the money among themselves," said Makhele, who added that the male officer used a bogus company in his brother's name.

"He would hire people to do the work and pay them, though the company did not exist."
