A group of women from the Charlotte Maxeke Memorial Church Ladies Fellowship opened their wallets and hearts to help the needy in Kliptown, Soweto, at the weekend.
The group gave food parcels, clothing and blankets to more than 40 members of the church and residents from the nearby informal settlement.
"This is very exciting because it is the first time that I am participating in this project. I am looking forward to becoming more involved in such projects in future," said Morekeng Vuma.
The situation nearly got out of hand when a handful of people from the informal settlement stormed the venue demanding handouts as well.
The situation calmed when the fellowship made a list of the needy people.
"We had to take down their names so they could calm down," said Vuma.
Michael Peterson, one of the beneficiaries, said: "We are grateful to the ladies who are doing this to help us."
The fellowship is named after pioneer Charlotte Maxeke who, together with Mangena Mokone, established the African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Africa in 1896.
