Security was beefed up at the Beit Bridge border post ahead of a South African parliamentary delegation visit.

Police were deployed at almost every point at the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The MPs visit came after numerous media reports of allegations of bribery and corruption related to illegal immigrants who allegedly often pass through without valid documents.

The delegation visited several other border posts in the past few days.

A number of police, customs and immigration officers have in the past been arrested for allegedly taking bribes at border posts.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean police have arrested the head of the country's most popular supermarket chain while a magistrate ordered the arrest of 25 other company officials, state media said yesterday.

Willard Zireva, OK Zimbabwe's chief executive, was arrested at his upmarket home in Harare on Tuesday night, the state-controlled Herald newspaper said.

He was arrested on allegations that some of his supermarkets had ignored a government directive to reduce prices to June 18 levels, the newspaper said. He was due to appear in court yesterday.

Directors of at least 25 supermarkets, liquor stores and milling companies in Bulawayo faced arrest yesterday for refusing to slash prices by about half. - Sapa-dpa
