If it will benefit commuters then I am all for the taxi industry receiving such subsidies. But certain conditions, such as the safety and wellbeing of passengers, must be attached to such a move.
All taxis should go for roadworthy tests every three months. They should also have valid PDP licences that must be displayed on the vehicles at all times.
There should be a drivers' report-back body like they have for Putco and Metro buses, where passengers and other motorists can report taxis who do not adhere to the rules of the road.
The government must enforce traffic laws and remove illegal vehicles and reckless drivers. Such people must be prevented from driving until they learn to respect passengers.
Readers will probably write in to say that I do not use taxis and therefore write as an outsider.
But I have used taxis and some of my colleagues still use them.
Someone needs to speak up. We cannot continue to let the taxi industry grow unchecked, allow it to become a law unto itself and make everyone else who use the roads more miserable.
