The gesture by the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People has significance beyond the US - as is the struggle for dignity among the darker-hued peoples of the world.

Sadly, such profanities as "nigger", used to dehumanise black people during the dark days, continue to litter speech.

This is thanks to the dirty lyrics of US gangster rappers and their equally mindless local copycats and legions of fans.

The so-called born-frees are mistaken if they think they can, in their pursuit of "coolness", dignify the symbols their forebears died fighting against.
