The excitement of winning a scholarship in Indonesia could be short-lived for a Mpumalanga student if he fails to raise money for his air ticket.
Lazarus Dliwako, pictured, of Mkhuhlu, near Hazyview, was among 16 South Africans awarded scholarships by the Indonesian embassy to study courses in arts and culture.
Dliwako, 27, said yesterday that his impoverished family was unable to raise the R11000 needed for the flight.
"Both my mother and elder brother are unemployed so I don't know how to raise the necessary cash.
"Even a loan would be fine as I would be entitled to a monthly allowance for the duration of the scholarship," promised Dliwako.
Dliwako, who matriculated in 2002 but did not have sufficient funds to further his studies, has been working as a volunteer teacher in a private school and used the stipend he received to buy groceries for his mother and four siblings.
He believes the opportunity to study drama in Indonesia will help him realise his childhood dream of becoming a professional actor.
"I had hoped to rescue my family from poverty after I completed the course in Indonesia," Dliwako said yesterday
He is due to study drama for one year at the University of Jakarta. He has to leave for the Asian country on August 20.
