Taxi owners should let police officers "get on with performing their jobs" rather than taking it upon themselves to hunt down killers.
Kwazulu-Natal Taxi Alliance spokesman Willie Mbhense was speaking after yet another taxi driver was gunned down in the province, this time near Mtubatuba.
The slain driver, 28-year-old Bhekisisa Myeni, was dropping off passengers at a bus stop in Nyonini on Monday when one of the passengers drew a firearm and shot him dead.
Police said the gunman and his companion then fled into nearby bushes.
"The three passengers who were in the taxi when the attack happened say the suspects were unknown to them," Mbhense said.
Myeni's death brings the number of people killed in taxi-related violence in the province to seven in one week.
Mbhense said the taxi industry needed "a whole new mind-set" if violence in the industry was ever to be prevented.
He said the taxi violence would not stop until the proper authorities - the police force - were left to do their job of arresting any perpetrators, instead of taxi drivers attempting to take the law into their own hands.
"What people in the taxi industry don't realise is that this violence creates a negative image of the industry and of those who run it," he said.
