Two motorists died and more than 12 others were injured in two separate multiple vehicle road crashes in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday.
One person died and 12 others were injured on the M37 near Amanzimtoti on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast yesterday.
The injured were transported by ambulance to local Kingsway and Prince Mshiyeni Hospitals including passengers of a minibus taxi that overturned after the collision.
At Mtubatuba, in northern Zululand, one person died after more than 12 cars collided on the N2 highway near Shikishela reserve.
Police said the multiple vehicle pile-up happened when motorists were caught out by poor visibility due to thick smoke from controlled fires at nearby plantations and mist that was slowing down traffic.
The dead man, Isaiah Dlamini, was driving his bakkie when he collided with a stationary truck. Other motorists were slightly injured and treated at the scene.
Nonkululeko Mbatha, spokesman of the provincial department of transport, warned drivers to be extra careful when driving on the N2 highway, especially in the morning when it's misty.
"There's very thick mist along the highway, especially in the morning and we urge drivers to be extra careful," she said, adding that extra traffic officers would be stationed along the highway to prevent more accidents.
