The community of Vusubuntu in Eastern Cape is to benefit from a project initiated to honour the "Cradock Four" for their role in the struggle for freedom.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, announced on Monday during the launch of the project at Vusubuntu.
Mabudafhasi said the department had injected R15million into the project, which will establish the Cradock Four Garden of Remembrance Complex and renovate Vusubuntu Cultural Village.
The project is an initiative of the Matthew Goniwe Cradock Four Trust, which is chaired by Mbulelo Goniwe, the former ANC chief whip and the son of the late Matthew Goniwe.
The Cradock Four - Matthew Goniwe, Sparrow Mkhonto, Fort Calata and Sicelo Mhlauli - who were members of the defunct United Democratic Front, were slain in June 1985 by the apartheid security police.
Mabudafhasi said the reason to upgrade Vusubuntu Cultural Village was to create a tourism centre for the area.
She said more chalets would be built in the cultural village, and the garden of remembrance would be built at a nearby site.
The project will also create jobs for members of the community and families of the Cradock Four.
Local hawkers will also sell their produce at the cultural village's stalls.
