The South African Communist Party in Limpopo has given the thumbs up to its national leadership ahead of the party's national congress starting in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape tomorrow.
The party, in a statement after its one-day council meeting in Polokwane yesterday, said the SACP leadership under its chairman, Charles Nqakula, and general secretary, Blade Nzimande, had performed well.
But the provincial SACP poured cold water on contesting the 2009 general elections separately from the ANC.
The provincial secretary, Justice Piitso, who is also Limpopo MEC for roads and transport, said while in principle the SACP saw nothing wrong with contesting elections on its own, its view was that the circumstances and conditions did not warrant this.
"We resolved to support the African National Congress and rally behind it in the next elections while continuously discussing state power issues," Piitso said.
"The party has performed well in the struggle for socialism under the able leadership of comrades Nzimande and Nqakula."
He said the two leaders had managed to lead the party over the past five years.
"We believe it is in the interest of unity and everything noble that the SACP stands for, that they be retained," said Piitso.
He said they would engage other provinces to support the re-election of the current national leadership at the all-important Port Elizabeth national congress, billed to start tomorrow and end on Sunday.
