Government warned

The Carletonville branch of the Congress of SA Trade Unions has given the government seven days to address the ongoing grievances of the residents of Merafong.

The Carletonville branch of the Congress of SA Trade Unions has given the government seven days to address the ongoing grievances of the residents of Merafong.

Chief among their concerns remains last year's re-demarcation of the municipality from the wealthy province of Gauteng to its poorer neighbour North West.

Cosatu demanded in a memorandum of grievances that the national government listen to the "voice of the people".

The move has been met with ongoing violent protests, particularly in Khutsong, near Carletonville, which have disrupted schooling and other services.

The re-demarcation was an issue which affected people's lives, had been on the agenda for a long time, but still the government had not come up with a solution, Cosatu charged in its memorandum. - Sapa
